Review of the Small Craft Surveyors Forum seminar at Seawork


Once again the room at the Seawork workboat exhibition in Southampton was packed with surveyors from many of the different surveying organisations. The three presentations arranged by the various organisations that afternoon proved to be of great interest and generated much comment and questions from the delegates present.


The session involving Mike Proudlove (windfarm vessel operator) and Steve Moffat (surveyor), moderated by Mike Schwarz, led to an open discussion about windfarm crew transfer vessels, their maintenance, common problems being found and the challenges of the survey and refit regimes.


Representing the Maritime & Coastguard Agency Small Commercial Vessels Department, Bas Edmonds spoke honestly and openly about the many challenges the organisation has faced and still faces. He talked about the essential work that is going on to redraft the colour codes, explaining how this would be delivered as well as the importance of harmonizing the surveying activities amongst certifying authorities.


The final speaker was Matthew Goodall, South Coast and Naval Account Manager from Akzo Nobel. In his presentation about Intersleek, silicon and fluoropolymer foul releasing coatings, he gave striking examples how after a few years of use, fouling is reduced by a huge amount.
