Certifying Authority training attracted a large online audience
The first session of the new look IIMS CA training was rolled out to an enthusiastic 60 strong online audience in mid-November. The session, which ran to three hours, included a bonus 45-minute presentation by Roger Barry from Inmarsat.
The main content of the morning was delivered by Mike Barnett. In his presentation he gave an explanation of the process of Plan Approval for an under 24 metre hull and deck structure by a Class Association. His presentation, technical in nature, gave a thorough overview of this topic and was very well received.
As mentioned, Roger Barry gave an introduction to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), which is an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase safety and make it easier to rescue distressed ships, boats and aircraft.
And Fraser Noble, IIMS Certifying Authority Chairman wrapped up the session by running through some of the administrative changes to bring coding examiners bang up to date with what is expected.
How up to date is your Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
It is increasingly expected and accepted that all professionals in whatever field of expertise commit themselves to a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. It is realised in today’s world that people are considered to be more competent through extending their knowledge by following a programme of continuous development, learning and updating.
In keeping with this thinking, the Institute follows this course to enable members to be considered and accepted as taking the professional way forward. This will also maintain their standards and competence levels.
Although the IIMS CPD Programme has been endorsed by the Board of Directors, it is not mandatory. But it is encouraged for members to maintain their level of membership and especially for those looking to upgrade to a higher level of membership. Only 10 points are required to be compliant with the Institute’s requirements and they are not hard to achieve, but you must be able to evidence your CPD claims.
IIMS has made the claiming of points straightforward by using the CPD App specially designed for the Institute. If you are not familiar and have yet to record points, you can access the App at
https://bit.ly/2IWcXLi. And remember once you have reached your 10 points for the year and are CPD compliant, we add the tick of compliance logo to your listings on the IIMS web site search and also to the Marine Surveyor Search App, giving you the edge over your competitors!
The CPD year ends on 31 December 2020, but you have until 31 March 2021 to make your claim for this year. If you need help please email Holly Trinder at
