IIMS set to deliver first practical course at the Boatbuilding Academy

It has been a year in the planning and COVID-19 has done its best to disrupt the plans, but it now looks as if the Institute can deliver its first 7-day residential, practical course at the Boatbuilding Academy in Lyme Regis from 13th December, using their specialist tutors. The Academy is operating the highest level COVID-19 protocols.

Six students have signed up for this pilot course and are able to claim this as one of their eight modules towards their professional qualification and diploma if they successfully pass the assignment at the end of the week.

Over the seven days, students will be immersed in every aspect of boat building and will work with wood and GRP, getting their hands dirty as well as learning theory too. Additionally, there will be sessions during the week on ultrasonic thickness measurements, writing effective reports and tips on how to conduct a survey given by an experience surveyor.

IIMS hopes to make this an annual event with 10 spaces available to students or less experienced surveyors. Photos to follow next month.

Report writing seminar a hit

Paul Homer and Mike Schwarz hosted a very successful online Report Writing seminar that attracted nearly 50 delegates in early November, including a good number of students who are studying the Professional Qualification in Large Yacht & Small Craft marine surveying.

The last session of the three-hour seminar proved fruitful with a number of delegates expressing their opinion on the images that were presented and expressing their comments on how they would phrase their reports.

The seminar content has been brought bang up to date to reflect modern report writing and proof-reading software recommendations and suggestions.

The scope of the seminar is as follows:

Part I: Preparing for survey, gathering data and compiling your report Part II: Giving the client what they want and not what the surveyor thinks they want Part III: Valuation Reports Part IV: Complaints, examples and practical exercises

A copy of the video is available to purchase. For details go to https://bit.ly/3hbWC0W.

The Report Writing seminar is delivered once a quarter. Watch out for 2021 dates coming soon.
