Every now and again I am invited to engage in something slightly unusual. Here’s one such example. Recently, the President of the Marine Surveyors Association of Bangladesh (MSAB), Captain Mahfuzul Islam, and IIMS Regional Director for Bangladesh, Capt Zillur Bhuiyan FIIMS, approached me as their local organisation heads towards its 30th
anniversary.
Some of those affiliated to MSAB are also members of IIMS, although by no means all. They invited IIMS President, Peter Broad, to compose an introduction to their special journal to mark this auspicious occasion. Furthermore, I was additionally asked to author an in-depth feature article about the surveying profession and IIMS as an organisation. Peter and I were more than happy to oblige. I profess to not knowing as much as I perhaps should about the marine surveying landscape in Bangladesh, but I suspect it offers some special challenges and I am keen to learn more. The journal should be available to read later this year and a link will be posted for those who are interested in reading it. In the meantime, I’d like to wish MSAB a happy 30th
birthday and continued success in the future.
In partnership with IIMS US Regional Director, James Renn FIIMS, the Institute is looking forward to meeting delegates both in-person and online at the IIMS US Conference, being held at the MITAGS facility, Baltimore on 25 - 26 August. James has assembled a fine selection of speakers covering the widest possible aspects of marine surveying. All are welcome to attend (including those from further afield who can join via Zoom) and more details about this event can be found at
