6 MAKING STANDARDS WORK FOR YOUR BUSINESS F
or Director of Standards Services Richard Taylor, the bringing together of expertise from across BSI provides the perfect opportunity to improve the way that customers consume
and realize value from the standards that BSI creates. “For our customers, whether it’s an industry,
a government department or an overseas national standards body, we can show them how developing standards and deploying them more effectively will help them respond to the challenges they face,” said Richard. “The common thread to all our services is
that we are able to combine our unrivalled expertise in creating and managing standards with in-depth knowledge of the sectors where our standards apply.” BSI now offers services built around fi ve
key areas: stakeholder and community engagement; research and insight; standards creation; consultancy and international technical assistance. “The changes we’ve made in bringing
research and consultancy together in one function gives us the opportunity to invest in and build on our advisory capability before and after standards are created,” said Richard. “While this capability exists within our
organization, we see opportunities to work with people and organizations in our network outside of BSI to deliver value for the end customer. We have experience in building consultancy partnerships and that is something we are keen to expand.” BSI’s research and insight services provide clients with an appreciation of the standards landscape in their area of interest (see ‘Landscape artists’ page 7-8). offer, such as providing a roadmap ahead of standards development, establish a strategic approach to creating the standard, responding to the specifi c challenge and identifying where standards gaps exist. These gaps might be fi lled through a
sponsored standard overseen by a project manager, usually a PAS which BSI is commissioned to create. The advantage of a PAS is that BSI can get the standard published relatively quickly, within 12 months. At the same time BSI is developing a more
‘agile’ standards development capability that will enable the creation of standards content with greater fl exibility and speed. This approach is particularly relevant to new technology where the traditional standards approach can’t keep up with the pace of innovation. “We are developing a more agile, fl exible and quicker service to respond to a demand and we’re offering that as a
service,” said Richard.
Consultancy and advisory services help clients manage standards in their area of interest and advise how standards might transform their business. “We can support our client’s decision- making on issues such as innovation, cost recovery, the circular economy and sustainable development. We help the client implement and embed that knowledge in their organization”, said Richard. “We can provide a full end-to-end service or pull out individual parts of that service, whatever the client requires. The key thing is that we are not just creating standards but helping clients extract value from them. “The more we can do to help clients and stakeholders engage with standards development and extract the full value from standards, the more resilient our economy will be to cope in a post-Brexit world,” said Richard.
