THE NEXT LEVEL

Taking cooperation to the next level

BSI has a strategic relationship with China that provides a fi rm foundation for the standards Business Environment Programme

The awarding of the Business Environment Programme (BEP) contract for standards to BSI is set to enhance the relationship between the UK and China established through the Standardization Cooperation Committee (SCC).

The SCC was established in 2015 as

a joint forum bringing together UK and China experts to work in areas important to both countries. It has provided a forum for UK/China discussions on the role that standards play to support trade, innovation and quality. To date three joint working groups

have been established, focusing on smart cities, civil nuclear energy and graphene. At the last meeting of the UK China Standardization Cooperation Commission held in Manchester in June, a diverse range of potential future areas for collaboration were discussed, including re-manufacturing and how international standards can play a stronger role to support China’s Belt and Road programme. “China is a strategically important

of the work programme refl ects this. The UK China SCC underpins our relationship with China and seeks to develop positive bilateral trade and investment outcomes,” said Head of International Engagement, Peter Sissons. “ “The SCC provides a solid foundation to build on, and the Business Environment

Programme both complements the work of the SCC and will facilitate the deepening of the relationship between the UK and China in a range of important areas for both our economies.”

China sees BSI as a valued partner in its drive to implement and develop international standards. “China fully

embraces the importance of standards to its economic development. China is an economic superpower and it is seeking to increase its capabilities to develop and implement standards. With our experience as an originator of many international standards we are able to support these objectives.” The BEP presents an opportunity to work in sectors of common interest between the UK and China that support the implementation. “China’s ambition is to increasingly lead

more international standards development. We are looking at where there are deep areas of expertise where UK/China joint development could provide an economic advantage to both our countries,” said Peter. “The increased use of international standards support trade and economic development. The work that we are undertaking with China, and in a range of important markets around the world, will unlock future trading opportunities for UK based fi rms.”
