Ethics and Artifi cial Intelligence under the spotlight in fi rst Consumer Forum

BSI held its fi rst Consumer Forum conference in June at the Barbican in London, marking a new era for consumer stakeholder engagement in British standards. The fi rst of what will be an annual

conference aims to bring together a wide range of consumer stakeholders to identify the main challenges facing consumers and to explore potential solutions that can be delivered through British standards. The conference, called ‘Ethics and

Artifi cial Intelligence - what does good look like for consumers?’ was opened by Liz Barclay, Chair of the BSI Consumer Forum. Opening the conference, she said, “Artifi cial intelligence has the potential to transform our lives for the better, making products, services and processes more effi cient”. However, she warned, “AI-enabled

technology is permeating our lives at a rapid pace and brings with it a huge risk of consumer harm if not managed properly.” Panellists from Lloyds Banking Group, LEGO group and Ethical Consumer discussed the societal benefi ts of ethical business. Microsoft, Yoti and Consumers International panellists spoke about what AI-enabled technology is, what it can and can’t do, and what it will take for consumers to use it to its full potential.

The Consumer Forum highlighted four

key areas of improvement that can build consumer trust and confi dence: ● Encouraging businesses to do better ● A collaborative and holistic approach ● Putting consumers at the heart of design

● Governance and oversight. “Consumers are the beta-testers for this

new technology, and consumer interests must be at the heart of this work at an early stage to ensure key issues are taken into account,” said Liz.
