Net Zero Barometer shows decarbonization lags behind growth as a business priority
BSI’s annual Net Zero Barometer Report shows a serious gap between those businesses with carbon emission reductions as their fi rst priority compared to those prioritizing growth. The survey of 1000 senior decision
makers and sustainability professionals showed half (49%) were focused on growth in their organization compared to a fi fth (20%) prioritizing their net zero ambitions. However, the majority of those surveyed
were still optimistic that the UK can achieve its net zero goal by 2050; 71% had already set their own net zero targets and 78% were convinced that reaching net zero was possible. This was a huge leap forward on the 2021 survey where only 40% of businesses had made a net zero commitment and a further 31% were ‘considering it’. Cost remains the most signifi cant barrier to implementing net zero plans; 45% cited cost as a barrier compared to supply chain issues (29%) and regulation (25%). Almost two-thirds (65%) of decision
makers say they have accelerated efforts to operate at net zero as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed said their organization is getting guidance from external sources, and 46% reporting that they would like more support.

Standards at BSI said: “The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recent COP26 summit in Glasgow, have spurred businesses on to reach net zero. Yet, our research has found that growth remains the leading priority, ahead of decarbonization. “There is a danger that the pressures of the energy crisis will create an either/ or narrative for both businesses and consumers – that the choice is between cutting costs or cutting carbon. This is a false dichotomy.
“As businesses become more effi cient and self-sustaining, their resilience to shocks will be greater, and their exposure to global events, such as energy price hikes, lessened. The misconception that it has to be either growth or net zero is one that organizations can and must counter by continuing to push forward with their net zero ambitions, and by working to ensure their business is also in line with their social responsibilities.” To read the full version of the BSI Net Zero Barometer Report 2022, click here
