The role of Standards in accelerating transition to net zero
There is a growing consensus that the current decade is critical for getting foundations in place if governments around the world are to meet their net zero emissions targets by 2050. In response to that challenge, BSI has a clear sustainability strategy which allows it to focus its efforts on a range of activities which support the decarbonization agenda in the UK and globally, through the international standards network.
The UK is the first government in the world to legislate its net zero commitment into law with a target date of 2050, and it has an ambition to make this country a global leader in the technology that can tackle the effects of climate change. BSI has taken a proactive position, working closely with government and regulators to identify ways it can support the UK government in its net zero ambitions. BSI’s sustainability strategy includes encouraging the use of standards to support the delivery of policy outcomes, using its convenor network to identify opportunities for standards that advance net zero, and supporting the integration into the mainstream of innovation that supports decarbonization of energy and transport. “There are a number areas of work
emerging that are viewed as strategic priorities for achieving net zero and BSI is very active in these areas,” said Sebastiaan Van Dort, Associate Director, Energy & Sustainability at BSI. “If you look at innovations such as electric cars, energy smart appliances, battery technology, hydrogen, voluntary carbon markets and sustainable finance, you will see standards being developed and

supporting innovation in all these areas,” said Sebastiaan. In order to decarbonize the UK’s energy
supply, more and more intermittent renewables need to be integrated into the grid, while maintaining the balance of electricity supply and demand. The right standards and protocols such as PASs 1878
and 1879 for energy smart appliances can help facilitate this. “Simply put, in order to meet net zero
we require unparalleled innovation,“ said Sebastiaan. “Standards help to de-risk markets, allowing for the integration of innovative techniques into the mainstream.” Crucial to getting buy-in to any standard

in the UK or globally is the building of consensus by getting all stakeholders in the room together, whether that’s real or virtual. “We have the infrastructure in place to bring all these stakeholders together; government, regulators, businesses and consumer groups,” said Sebastiaan. “The purpose of bringing stakeholders together is to build a roadmap – how are we going to get to the outcomes we want and to understand where standards can play a supporting role. “As we start to look at all the societal issues related to net zero, such as the
