The road to BSI Identify
The background to the development of BSI Identify lies in the UK government’s desire to accelerate the digitization of the built environment, which has been slow to embrace the digital revolution compared to other sectors. When Innovate UK offered funding for
projects which promoted digitization in the construction industry, BSI took the opportunity to investigate the feasibility of using DOI (Digital Object Identifier) system
technology to create a bespoke system for the industry. “As a publisher BSI has been using the DOI System for many years to identify our own standards and create links across our portfolio of 60,000 titles, said Will. “We knew the capability of DOI and asked ourselves, could we apply it to construction products. Now we are part of a group of registration agencies authorized to use the DOI System under the guidance of ISO 26234-2012.”
The DOI System is a reliable, robust and inherently scalable way of linking an object to where information about that object is stored. Normal links to websites disappear over time as information is moved or disappears, whereas a DOI based identifier goes through a ‘handle system’. In effect, this means product information can always be found through the UPIN, even if that’s in 50 or 100 years time.
