The making of a dementia-friendly community

The making of a dementia-friendly community

It’s only in the last 10 years that dementia has begun to be openly spoken about, creating a greater understanding of the problems faced by those who live with it and those who care for them. Now work pioneered by BSI and the Alzheimer’s Society has led to the creation of a new international standard aimed at making communities across the world more dementia-friendly

According to research by the Alzheimer’s Society, many people living with dementia feel that wider society doesn’t understand their condition, the impact it has on them or how to interact with them. As a result, many people end up

withdrawing from their community as the condition progresses. A third of people with dementia say they feel lonely and a quarter of carers said they feel ‘cut off from society’. It was to try and improve this situation that BSI was commissioned by the

Alzheimer’s Society in 2014 to create best practice guidelines that communities could follow to help them become more inclusive and prevent people living with dementia and their carers from becoming isolated. The work was prompted by then Prime

Minister David Cameron’s challenge to set up a Champion Group to deliver major improvements in dementia care and research. Creating dementia-friendly communities was identified as one of three major areas to work on.
