Last week I went up to Little Carne Farm with my daughter to take part in Little Eden, a new Early Years activity session our schools team have put together. Boots on and wrapped up warm, we sang around the camp fire, toasted marshmallows, did leaf rubbings, and got the glitter/natural material ratio completely wrong for our plant-based mobile. Even now there are squirrels rubbing their eyes at the bling that has mysteriously appeared in the trees. It might be a bit damp and cold but there's something special about playing outside at this time of year. As a parent of a three-year-old, it's also refreshing to be reminded that the outdoors aren't off limits because of a bit of bad weather, especially with winter waiting in the wings. Autumn is the start of the new term
at Eden. Our second intake of students and apprentices have settled in by now, and one of our first apprentices, Jess Hill, bids us farewell as she looks back on her time at Eden. Also in this issue, Martin Stevens from the University of Exeter explores how evolution has produced plants that deceive and
ensnare other creatures for their own ends (his new book Cheats and Deceits is reviewed on page 27). As Eden prepares to launch the next phase of its tree- cloning programme, we talk to Chris Bisson about the mutually beneficial arrangements between ancient trees and the communities they support. Looking ahead to the festive season,
the Macmillan Christmas Fair offers the chance to get some of your festive shopping done early, and committee member Lucy Orr previews the products and companies that will be there. Even if you can't make it in person, there are some great gift ideas to discover – and it's all for a good cause.
