We can all struggle when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and our wildlife f riends are of ten the most vulnerable to the extremes the elements take. They just need a bit of a helping hand somet imes!


Here are some t ips on how to look af ter wildlife this winter.


Frozen ponds


If you have a pond, check it every day for ice as toxic gases can build up if it f reezes over, and may kill f ish or f rogs hibernat ing at the bot tom.


If the pond does f reeze over, carefully place a saucepan of hot water on the surface to melt a hole. Never t ip boiling water onto it or break the ice with force, as this can harm f ish.


Feeding birds

Badgers Badgers don't hibernate, but they do sleep through most of the severe weather, and have a tough t ime f inding their favourite food of earthworms when the ground is f rozen. Nibbles such as light ly cooked meats, cheese, peanuts and f ruit would be welcomed.
