Stapeley's Laura is the RSPC

A's first apprentice

In September we welcomed apprent ice Laura Talbot to the Stapeley Cat tery team. Since star t ing with us she has done really well and has shown she has an amazing natural ability with animals.

Laura's role is special because not only

is she our f irst apprent ice, but she is also the RSPCA's f irst apprent ice nat ionally!

The Society has launched its

Generat ion Kind programme, which aims to reach out to young people with the aim of educat ing a younger generat ion about the importance of animal welfare.

Generat ion Kind will be running a set of

ambit ious, innovat ive projects that aim to nurture and encourage the values of kindness and compassion towards all animals. These projects focus on three key areas: young people in schools, disadvantaged young people and young of fenders. Everyone can help, by encouraging our governments to include animal welfare in educat ion.

As part of the scheme, Laura is

current ly training in Level 2 Animal Care and Welfare in the Cat tery and loves giving the cats a good fuss!

Now Laura is working four days a

week at the cat tery while studying for her apprent iceship - something which she believes has kept her away f rom a life of crime - and she is hoping that this will put her in good stead for her dream job as an RSPCA inspector.

Init ially Laura came to us af ter

struggling in a school environment . But an RSPCA educat ion worker

reached out to animal-lover Laura, and as a reward for going into school four days a week, she was allowed to work at one of

22

the charity?

s animal centres every Friday. As a result , she started going into

school more. ?If I wasn?t doing this apprent iceship, I

would have a big grey tag around my ankle right now,? said Laura. ?It has kept me out of trouble and out of doing things which I shouldn?t be doing.? ?I really struggled with school, but

knowing I could come into Stapeley Grange and help once a week encouraged me to make an ef fort with my educat ion. When I was of fered the apprent iceship I was really happy, especially as I? career with animals. I?

d like a d really like to be an

RSPCA inspector and this is the best way for me to get experience. ?Animals can?t speak up for themselves

and I want to speak out for them and help them.?
