STAPELY'S APPEAL FOR WASHING LIQUID ANSWERED


In August our team were faced with a large number of oiled birds from Tamworth in Staffordshire. It turned out to be 17 Canada geese and three


greylag geese that needed urgent attention after oil had been dumped on a river canal. If oil is not removed from waterbirds it reduces the


natural waterproofing in their plumage, leaving them at risk of dying from hypothermia - so it is vital that they are treated as soon as possible. Every oiled bird is assessed on arrival to Stapeley


Grange and sometimes several deep cleans are needed to remove all the contaminate. It can be fairly labour intensive, sometimes taking


two members of staff 30 minutes for each wash. It can take several washes with birds that are heavily oiled. At the time there was also reports of a further 17


birds affected by the spill so our team were on high alert for further incoming casualties. Given the Centre's stock levels it was obvious that


an appeal was needed for more fairy liquid. A press release was urgently followed up with Twitter and Facebook appeals. As well as receiving


bottles of fairy liquid from those living local, Proctor and Gamble answered our call. Scott Popham, Senior Communications Manager for Northern Europe at Procter & Gamble said: “When we heard The RSPCA Centre in Stapeley was seeking donations of Fairy to help clean geese after the West Midlands canal oil spill, we were happy to be able to help. "Fairy is known as the washing up liquid that best cuts-through grease, but it is also an effective yet gentle detergent for cleaning oiled wildlife, and has been used in many clean-up operations. "We're so pleased the donation was put to good


use saving all 20 birds affected by the recent spill. P&G has ensured that all four RSPCA Wildlife Centres now have a supply of Fairy to have to hand for future emergencies.”
