In 2020, only three regions in the state saw an increase in cargo theft: Araçatuba (25%), Presidente Prudente (13%), and Campinas (6%). The other regions showed a reduction.

SP-330 (Anhanguera) and BR-116 were among the highways with the highest numbers of incidents.

In Q4-2020, cargo theft fell 33% year-over- year in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with 1,196 cases recorded, according to the state’s Institute of Public Security. Incidents declined in every region of the state, led by the Southern Rio area, which saw a 55% decline in 2020.

General Considerations

The most commonly stolen products in 2020 in Brazil were Miscellaneous, Food & Drinks, Tobacco, and Electronics. The most common type of event was theft (with a direct threat to the driver), which accounted for 91% of cases. Most thefts occurred on urban areas (58%) and in the morning (35%).

Final Considerations

The country has maintained a downward trend in cargo theft since 2018. However, there are extremely organized gangs capable of carrying out large operations, which continue to cause great losses to companies. There is also a persistently high number of small-scale opportunistic thefts that result in significant financial loss. Therefore, despite the downward trend, there is no reason for easing the prevention measures in place.
