Can you advise how I can convince my management to consider going for a TSR Self-certification for our transport operations?


Answer: Apart from added security benefits, first time users of TSR Self-certification Level 3 will be using an industry-wide recognised security standard. Clients and partners of the certified LSP will know their supplier has introduced a recognised security standard to protect their supply chain. The LSP, once certified, can also promote its certification status to clients and use the TAPA logo (subject to conditions) on their marketing materials.

Following investment in security equipment, and after having my staff take TAPA training, I have recently achieved FSR Level C Self-certification. We were very proud to achieve this status. However, one of my clients recently stated that they did not trust the TAPA Self-certification option and would like to see a certification completed by a TAPA IAB. How should I respond?


Answer: TAPA EMEA’s experience is that, in general, TAPA Self-certifications are performed to a high standard. Nonetheless, there are those who have concerns regarding the quality and the ongoing compliance of a Self-certification location.


However, there are other factors to consider: • The LSP’s own staff member is required to be TAPA trained to perform the audit;


• There is a possibility TAPA may arrange for a validation audit to be completed to check the actual compliance status;


• Some shippers will always value the assurance of using IABs performing TAPA audits over an LSP’s Self-certification;


• TAPA’s view is both Self-certifications and IAB certifications can achieve the same levels of quality.


There is a risk for the LSP and their clients that a Self-certification auditor could miss something that a trained IAB auditor would not, but that is a reality of using professional external auditors versus in-house resources.
