TAPA STANDARDS FAQs STANDARDS FAQs #45 A monthly update by TAPA EMEA's Standards Lead, Mark Mark Gruentjes Steve McHugh

Gruentjes, and Executive Director Standards, Steve McHugh After receiving a steady stream of questions about TAPA’s Security Standards from Audit Bodies and our members, we feel it will be beneficial to share some of the questions received and the responses given by the TAPA EMEA Standards Team. We aim to cover 3-5 questions in Vigilant each month.

In this month’s FAQs, TAPA EMEA goes back to basics and revisits the benefits of our entry level Self-certification option. Over 20% of all audits are now using Self-certification, which is available for all three TAPA Security Standards: FSR, TSR and PSR for facilities, trucking and secure parking respectively.

Some companies clearly view Self-certification as a perfect way to get involved with the TAPA Standards. Others remain cautious about using this option, concerned that the requirements may not always be present to the required standard. So, let’s share some answers to the types of questions we are receiving – and, if you want further details, please contact us directly.

You can also propose a Standards topic for discussion in future FAQs updates or ask questions about one of our published responses by messaging us using this link

Question 1.

Self-certification: I have used the FSR Level C certification at two of my facilities. I would like to upgrade one of them to FSR Level B. Why does TAPA not allow self-certification for Level B?

Answer: As mentioned in the introduction, Self-certification was introduced as an entry level certification option. It was restricted to the lowest certification levels of all three TAPA Standards and, therefore, does not need the presence of a TAPA authorised Independent Audit Body (IAB). This concept saves time, complexity and costs in achieving certification. That said, it is the minimum security level, albeit a good general standard of security where risks are assessed as being medium to low.

Question 2.

I recently attended a TAPA FSR training. Why is Self-certification not allowed to be included in a Multi-site certification?

Answer: For the same reasons as mentioned in the previous answer. Self-certification was introduced as an entry level certification option. Multi-site certification requires a more complex management system and involvement of a TAPA authorised IAB. Self-certification is just not compatible with a Multi-site operation.

Question 3.

If I go for an FSR Self-certification, can TAPA train my staff or is it down to me to follow the process? I may need help.

Answer: TAPA EMEA can provide training, information and links to companies that can help you with your Self-certification. Use the link at the start of this update to request further information.
