CONFERENCE TO IMPROVE SAFETY AFTER TRAGIC DEATHS OF TWO ROMANIAN NATIONALS GAINS OVER 15,000 ONLINE ENGAGEMENTS
An online conference on truck driver safety organised by Tranzit, the leading transport and logistics magazine in Romania, following the deaths of two Romanian drivers in the last two months, attracted over 14,500 views on the publication’s Facebook channel and was viewed more than 1,000 times on YouTube.
Speakers at the conference included Ap Boom, TAPA EMEA’s Chief Financial & Compliance Officer, who presented data on the level of risk to drivers and trucks, as well as information on hotspots for these attacks and recommendations on how to reduce the threat, including the adoption of TAPA’s TSR Security Standards and using secure parking locations participating in the Association’s Parking
Security Requirements (PSR) Standard.
The tragic deaths of the two drivers in Italy and at a parking place between France and Spain has acted as another reminder of the threats drivers are increasingly facing. Two drivers – one leading a drivers’ community on Facebook and the other a founder of the non-profit organisation ‘Volunteers in Europe,’ also highlighted the high risks facing truck
drivers in Europe. The drivers’ representatives have already been invited to the European Parliament to present proposals by the driving communities to help avoid more loss of life.
Tranzit magazine’s Marilena Matei told Vigilant the most important request is to have mandatory illuminated parking places all over Europe, cameras to check cars which park between trucks and, most importantly, more police support. ”Police should come quicker than in 1.5-2 hours and the ambulance services the same – if so, the life of the Romanian driver stabbed in the back with a sword at the French border with Spain may have been saved,” Marilena reported.
The conference also discussed developing an app which could be activated by drivers facing danger, and translating police report forms into 4-5 European languages to assist victim drivers recording information on thefts or assaults.
