UK MOTORWAY SERVICE AREAS

HUNTING GROUND

Motorway Service Areas (MSA) across the United Kingdom are becoming a hotbed of cargo crime with organised criminal groups preying on trucks and their loads at an ever-increasing rate. It’s hardly surprising really when you consider the facts:

• High value, theft targeted products are most at risk in the supply chain when they physically stop moving

• Three-quarters of recorded cargo crimes now regularly involve thefts from vehicles in unsecured parking locations

In 2016 and Q1 2017, the UK recorded the highest number of cargo theft incidents in TAPA’s Incident Information Service (IIS) database in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region with year-on-year increases of 223.7% and 218.3% respectively

• Drivers needing to take rest breaks are quite understandably drawn to the facilities at the more than 100 motorway service areas located along the UK motorway system

The fact that these crimes are occurring and seem to be escalating has been well-documented in TAPA’s Incident Information Service (IIS) reports in recent months. The big question is whether anyone is trying to stop it? Vigilant went to investigate and found some welcoming news…
