ROADSEC SECURITY TOOLKIT ON TRACK FOR DELIVERY TO EUROPEAN COMMISSION THIS SUMMER
Juha Hintsa, Senior Researcher at the Cross-border Research Agency (CBRA) provides the latest update on ROADSEC, a joint project with TAPA EMEA for the Directorate- General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission (DG MOVE), to produce a security toolkit for fighting cargo theft, irregular migration and terrorism in the European road transport sector.
The ROADSEC project began in January this year and is progressing on schedule. Our progress is largely thanks to strong support from industry specialists and governmental experts across the European Union. Throughout the month of May, a large number of European public and private organisations and experts provided feedback on the key sections of the ROADSEC toolkit. This was followed by a ROADSEC workshop at DG MOVE in Brussels in early June with 15 top European experts participating - representing road transport, freight forwarding, insurance, border guards etc. - to validate and further develop the toolkit. CBRA wishes to thank all of the experts who have shared their knowledge and ideas, and provided feedback. CBRA and TAPA EMEA are now incorporating all of this intelligence into the final toolkit in order to deliver it to the European Commission later this summer.

‘A ROADSEC workshop at DG MOVE in Brussels in early June with European experts representing road transport, freight forwarding, insurance and border guards helped to validate and further develop the toolkit.’
The ROADSEC toolkit is also attracting global interest. Dr. Toni Männistö, CBRA Researcher, gave a presentation on ROADSEC at a conference of the Mexican Institute of Transport in Querétaro, Mexico, on 8 June. This invitation-only event assembled leading Mexican road transport security experts and international specialists to share their views on security threats, procedures and challenges. Several delegates pointed out synergies between European and Mexican efforts to improve road transport security to tackle cargo thefts and truck hijackings. In his welcome speech, Roberto Aguerrebere, General Director of the Institute, highlighted the importance of international cooperation between
government and industry to fight crime and terrorism in the road transport sector. There seems to be strong interest and promising opportunities to strengthen trans-Atlantic cooperation on road transport security.
