Midlands Tech Hosts First SC Esports State Championship

Countless computers and keyboards make their way through the halls of MTC’s Beltline Campus on a regular basis, but never have they been used for feats like the ones accomplished this May. Over 150 middle and high school students from across the state command Q’d their Microsoft Word documents and instead, launched Super Smash Bros. and Rocket League for a style of competition like no other in our state.

Placed in teams of three, competitors faced off in a tournament-style format with the opportunity to showcase their skills in either game until a winner emerged.

Collaborating and communicating with other players ensured each team was competitive and successful in their matchups.

Playing host to the inaugural esports championship is another example of MTC finding innovative ways to be a part of history in all the right ways. Colorful LED lights flooded each room on the first floor of the Center for Business and Information Technologies to make for an event setup that is still yet to be rivaled.

MTC’s own esports team was also in attendance and can now look forward to competing for a championship in years to come.

State Placements

Super Smash Bros. 1st Place | Summerville High School 2nd Place | Lexington One Varsity 3rd Place | Greenville Technical Charter High School

Rocket League 1st Place | AC Flora High School 2nd Place | Summerville High Team A 3rd Place | Florence One Team A

The championship event, hosted by SC Scholastic Esports, was an opportunity for students to channel valuable lessons learned and apply them to a passion of theirs in a positive way.

“These students are working together,” said Ryan Panter with SC Scholastic Esports. “Communicating, collaborating—all the right way. These are skills they need to be successful in the real world.”

“For us, it’s a chance to show the state that you can come to MTC, compete in esports, and still gain an affordable and high- quality education,” said Esports Club Advisor Shickre Sabbagha.

The future of esports in South Carolina is bright! Congratulations to the winners of the day and to all participating schools and organizations for a successful event.
