MSc Education (Teaching and Learning) This pathway is particularly suitable for those who already hold master’s-level credits from a teaching qualification, such as a PGCE, and who want to build on this foundation for their professional development.


In common with other MSc Education students, you will take the compulsory research methods unit, Introduction to Educational Inquiry, and write a dissertation. You can choose the rest of your units from across the programmes offered by the school. Your final choice of units will follow consultation with tutors in order to ensure that your choice is as coherent and useful as possible, as well as suiting your individual needs.


Entry requirements: A good UK undergraduate honours degree (or international equivalent) and one year’s appropriate professional experience, such as a PGCE or teaching experience.


MSc Educational Research The aim of the MSc in Educational Research is to provide the methodological, analytical and practical expertise required to become a competent educational researcher. This is an Economic and Social Research Council- recognised programme, and one of the research training pathways that make up the South West Doctoral Training Partnership.


This MSc will appeal to those who are interested in developing a career in educational research, as well as professionals working in education institutions or organisations that require research knowledge and skills.


You will work towards a master’s qualification, through six taught units (120 credit points) and a dissertation (60 credit points), to cover the required preparatory training for a PhD application. It also provides research training for PhD candidates, who are required to take four core units (80 credit points).


Entry requirements: A minimum of a UK undergraduate honours degree (upper second- class honours or international equivalent) and relevant professional experience, supported by two referees.


MSc Psychology of Education BPS This MSc conversion programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and provides an excellent grounding in the psychology of education. It draws on a wide range of theories and methods from across the core areas of psychology and encourages you to interrogate their application to education and educational contexts.


You will benefit from our longstanding tradition of high-quality research and teaching in this area and will acquire unique skills in both psychology and research methods. You will learn how research can inform theory, policy and practice, and how to conduct your own piece of empirical research to answer appropriate research questions. You will also acquire a range of transferable skills, such as communication skills, numerical reasoning, computer literacy and teamwork.


The knowledge and skills obtained through the programme are highly desired by employers and relevant to a wide range of careers in which an understanding of human behaviour or research methods is relevant. Successful students will be eligible to apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the BPS and for further professional training accredited by the BPS.


Entry requirements: Applicants must hold a minimum of a UK upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) and be able to demonstrate work experience in an area relevant to psychology (eg work as a teacher, learning support assistant, assistant psychologist or volunteer in schools or settings for vulnerable clients).


Applicants who hold a lower second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) and have at least one year of full-time work experience relevant to psychology may be considered on a case-by-case basis.


MSc Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) This flexible programme has been developed for teachers and other TESOL professionals, such as educational administrators, inspectors, materials or curriculum developers, assessment specialists and policy makers, as well as those planning to undertake doctoral study in TESOL or applied linguistics.


The programme particularly values the professional experience that participants bring to the course. It provides a learning context in which you can reflect on your professional practice, the policies and diverse contextual factors that frame it, the theoretical frameworks that inform it, and the research that exists or could be conducted to substantiate or refute intuitive judgments.


Entry requirements: A good UK undergraduate honours degree (or international equivalent) in English Language, TESOL or applied linguistics, and be able to demonstrate part-time or full-time classroom teaching experience or other TESOL-industry relevant experience. Examples of the types of roles we consider relevant are: Language curriculum developer; Language testers; ELT materials designers; Language teaching assistants; Researchers in a field relevant to TESOL.


Applicants who hold a good UK undergraduate honours degree (or international equivalent) in a non-language related subject need to demonstrate a minimum of one year’s full-time classroom teaching or other TESOL-industry relevant experience.
