Faculty of Arts


The Faculty of Arts provides world-class academic and professional training for more than 600 postgraduates across a broad range of academic disciplines.


Our researchers deal with subjects at the core of human experience; students write and think about the cultural, intellectual and social inheritance of the world’s peoples, past and present. Postgraduates study at one of three levels: taught master’s (MA), one-year research master’s (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).


Taught programmes can be full-time and taken in one year, or part-time, with the workload split over two or three years. Our research programmes start in either September or January. The MPhil is a one-year (two years part-time) tailor-made research programme at master’s level. The qualification is awarded on successful completion of a 25,000-word dissertation. The PhD research programme can normally be taken after completion of an MA or MPhil programme. Doctoral programmes are usually three years in length on a full-time basis or six years part- time. The qualification is awarded on successful completion of an 80,000-word dissertation.


We are a key member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWW DTP), a scholarly community linking eight leading universities and prestigious sector partners. The DTP offers bespoke training and resources for groundbreaking academic research and a lifetime of intellectual endeavour.


We pride ourselves on offering unique resources for research. Bristol’s Theatre Collection, which features 1.5 million items dating from 1572 to the present, is one of the largest archives of British theatre history in the world, shedding rich light on many disciplines. The Brunel Collection is the world’s finest archive of Isambard Kingdom Brunel source material. Alongside other University Special Collections, the Allen Lane Penguin Archive provides further exceptional opportunities for original projects.


Research in the Faculty of Arts The faculty is renowned for its research activity and many of our staff are well known internationally in their subject area and in the media. The distinctive combination of individual disciplines and cross-disciplinary collaborations creates a vitality and vibrancy, which is reflected in our full schedule of research events, from regular subject seminars to major international conferences.


We are proud of our large cohort of research students and encourage them to develop their skills and knowledge by playing a full role in our research culture alongside academics at the forefront of their disciplines.
