Dick Potts was renowned for his conservation work and was posthumously awarded the RSPB’s conservation medal.

his is a sad issue of Gamewise because in it we commemorate the passing of Dr Dick Potts, my predecessor, who was director general of what was then The Game Conservancy Trust between 1993 and 2001. There is a full obituary of Dick and his considerable lifetime achievements on page 8. Dick was both a force of nature and a force for nature. His passion was wild grey partridges, but that did not begin to describe the

T

breadth of his interests and the extent of his intense curiosity. An old friend and neighbour of Dick’s said to me recently “Dick was fantastic company as he was literally interested in everything”. Dick would have been very touched to know that he was posthumously awarded the RSPB’s conservation medal.

This edition of Gamewise also highlights the GWCT’s 29th Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July. This is always a fantastic, not-to-be-missed event and I hope we will see all our Scottish readers there. There is no more perfect place to be than on the banks of the river Tay, in the shadow of the palace, on a beautiful July weekend. We look forward to welcoming you to the members’ enclosure where

we will be featuring GWCT’s new research and demonstration farm in Scotland, entertaining politicians and policymakers, educating the public on the importance of game management for biodiversity and welcoming many friends. We hope to see you there.
