Invaluable insights on research and lifelong learning Tim Weiss director of the Society for Education and Training

Your first inTuition of 2018 is a bumper issue that brings you a great mix of articles and includes the annual Research Supplement. The supplement, now in its third year, has been curated by Michael

Conway-Jones, of Fircroft College, and his team, and it offers a wealth of articles demonstrating how research informs and supports professional practice in what are times of change for our sector. With a foreword from Sir Alan Tuckett (page 2), a true champion of

adult learning, and a piece from Professor John Holford (page 8) on the challenges that remain for lifelong learning, there is a direct link between the Research Supplement and the cover interview with Lord Blunkett on page 10 of your main inTuition. Sir Alan, Professor Holford and Lord Blunkett, who introduced many of us

to the concept of lifelong learning 20 years ago, are wonderful spokesmen for the transformative power of education and training, and we are delighted to be able to bring them together for you. No discussion of the power of

education and training to transform lives would be complete without a look at the growing importance of professional behaviours. Historically mislabelled as ‘soft skills’,

We are delighted to bring Sir Alan Tuckett,

professional behaviours are now centre stage, forming part of the new apprenticeship standards and technical education routes. Given their centrality to teaching and learning as we bed in the reforms to technical and vocational education and training (TVET), we have decided to run them as a theme across all parts of SET membership for much of 2018 – in inTuition, and also webinars, web content and our local networks. Peter Rook’s timely analysis (page 12) asks how teachers and trainers

SUBSIDISED WORKSHOPS SET members are eligible for subsidised rates for a series of workshops on apprenticeship end-point assessment. The workshops, run by Future

Apprenticeships, which is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and commissioned by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF), will help participants understand what makes a good end-point assessor and will feature mini-CPD sessions. Beforehand, workshop participants

will have access to an online self- assessment tool to identify their CPD needs and help them choose sessions. Workshops will be held on:

• 14 March (London): Deciding / preparing your organisation’s involvement in end-point assessment.

• 22 March (Birmingham): Becoming an end-point assessor – kick-starting your preparations and CPD. Find out more and book your place on the ETF booking site.

should best approach teaching professional behaviours, and how they might be assessed. The issue emerges too in our Subject Focus (page 24). Finally, two important pieces of news. First, your membership will be due

for renewal at the end of March – I do hope you’ll join us again (make sure you take advantage of the 10 per cent discount for Direct Debit). Second, after three successful years leading the SET team, last

month we said goodbye to Sarah Morgan. Taking her place as head of membership is Martin Reid, who has a wealth of experience from the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the Chartered Insurance Institute. Please join me in welcoming Martin to the team.
