AS THE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS REACH THEIR FIVE-YEAR MILESTONE, HERE ARE SOME ENGAGING WAYS TO ADVANCE YOUR CAREER

This year we’re celebrating five years since the launch of the Professional Standards, the framework for effective practice in teaching and education. They provide an accessible way for teachers and trainers to reflect on their practice and identify areas for their professional development. There will be SET members who look at these standards regularly, perhaps to guide and mentor new staff in your organisation. Others will be new to FE and starting to get familiar with them. There will also be many of you who will

have looked at the standards during your training, but can find it difficult to find time now that you are in a job, juggling different learners or changing providers. We want all our members to be

reflecting on the Professional Standards and striving for excellence in their practice, and we want to provide you with simple and engaging ways to do this. You can begin by looking at the guidance on the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) website where there are practical examples and illustrations. Then take a look at the updated

Professional Standards Research Tool (see page 24), the interactive resource that includes research articles, reports and other formal evidence mapped to the 20 Professional Standards. You can use this to help you keep up to date with relevant educational theory and research that will

inform improvements in your practice. For those of you who prefer to learn with other practitioners across the sector, join us at one of our SET Local Network Groups (see page 30). This year, hundreds of FE professionals have worked together at these practitioner-led events on topics such as supporting SEND learners, how to engage with practitioner research, and demonstrations of how other practitioners are using technology to enhance learning. Everyone registering for an event should familiarise themselves with the standards and select some that apply to their own development, to help steer their learning. If you want to be recognised for

reflecting on your practice, you can work towards Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status and Advanced Teacher Status (ATS). Through feedback in 2018, we learnt that 92 per cent of participants believed that professional formation had some, or significant, impact on their practice and their learners, and 83 per cent believed there had been a positive impact on their organisation. You only have until 30 September to

register for this QTLS cohort. Find out more at on the SET website or, if reading your inTuition digitally click bit.ly/RegisterForQTLS
