to each one of the 20 Professional Standards. The research tool is a redeveloped and enhanced version of the popular Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) research map developed in 2016. It is hosted on the Society for Education and
Training’s (SET) website, and offers clear navigation to a range of intuitive features designed to be accessed anywhere, any time, on any mobile or desktop devices. The tool gives users quick access to an updated range of new resources relating to the Professional Standards, including blogs, papers, videos, posters and much more, including a number of practical and research-based articles published in inTuition over the years. Tricia Odell, head of QTLS and Advanced Teacher Status at the ETF, said: “Since their development in 2014, the Professional Standards have supported practitioners to maintain and improve standards of teaching and learning, and outcomes for learners. “The Professional Standards Research Tool aims
to help busy teachers source accessible research articles and reports that are referenced to the professional standards.
“It will be of significant benefit to those undertaking
QTLS and ATS [Advanced Teacher Status], as these participants are required to demonstrate how improvements in their practice have been informed by relevant educational research and theory.” Although hosted on the SET website the research
tool is available to all further education and training practitioners, whether members of SET or not. The Professional Standards were never meant to sit on a shelf for occasional reference and the new research tool makes the standards more useful than ever in supporting knowledge and practice.
MORE RESOURCES LINKED TO THE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
The Education and Training Foundation (ETF) offers a range of free resources to help practitioners get the most out of the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers. For many the first port of call will be the Professional Standards Self-
Development Guide. This 20-page guide, available from the ETF website (see link below), explains
how to use the Professional Standards self-assessment tool (more details below), and how to use the outcomes to identify and then plan personal and professional development needs.
Supplementing and building on this document is the Professional Standards
‘How To’ Guide which includes a collection of case studies outlining how different employers went about supporting their staff in using the standards. The Professional Standards Self-Assessment Tool is a simple way for practitioners to rate their own knowledge and skills against the professional standards, in a non-judgemental way. The tool generates charts at the end giving users useful at-a-glance insights into how they rated themselves against the standards.
