at the Inaugural All Maryland MFHA Performance Trials • March 4-5 • Wye Island by Crystal Brumme Pickett, ex MFH • photographs by Tisa Della Volpe Photography & Karen Kandra
On March 4-5, Wicomico Hunt Club hosted the fi rst ever All Maryland Masters of the Foxhounds Association Performance Trails on Wye Island, bringing together not just Penn Marydel hounds (as in prior years), but the full chorus of diversity found in Maryland packs: crossbreds and American. Perfor- mance Trials measure whether an individual hound has the traits considered desirable for a good hunting hound and necessary for an eff ective pack of foxhounds. Judges monitor how the hounds hunt, trailing, the fullness of cry, and accounting for the hunted quarry by causing it to go to ground. Due to constraints placed by the State (which owns the island), the number of hounds and mounted participants were limited. All packs that are recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association were invited, with a limit of fi ve hounds and six mounted participants, including the huntsman. The Potomac Hounds declined the invitation which allowed the organizers to add an unrecognized pack as well. Participating were De La Brooke, Elkridge-Harford, Goshen, Green Spring, Howard County-Iron Bridge, Marlborough, Mt. Carmel, New Market-Middletown Valley and Wicomico.
Overall fi rst place went to Wicomico hounds. Pictured here is Wicomico Hunt huntsman Marty Morani.
Howard County – Iron Bridge Hounds placed sec- ond overall. Pictured is HCIBH master (and Mary- land Horse Council sponsor) Tracy Diamond.
Anne Arundel County resident Barbara Smith, who whips-in for Marlborough Hunt Club and Viriginia packs Bull Run and Thorton Hill, and who is a seasoned judge of performance trials, was one of four mounted judges (plus one apprentice judge).
Performance trials take a vil- lage of volunteers, mounted and unmounted participants! Pictured is Frank Durkee, re- tired mounted member of Mt. Carmel and Elkridge-Harford and current foot follower with Wicomico, and MFHA Opera- tions Director Billie-Jo Pearl.
New Market-Middletown Valley member Chad Traugott high-fi ves Wicomico Secretary Holly Isaacson for a job well done!
