her time working as the UNL Horse intern, being a T.A. for Dr.Brett White for Repro- duction, and competing on the horse judging team where she was High Individual Overall at the All American Quarter Horse Congress and AQHA World Show. Becca also competed in the Academic Quardathalon. Becca is now working on her Master’s of Applied Science at UNL under Dr. Kathy Anderson, while work- ing full time for the University of Maryland. Becca is looking forward to growing the

Maryland 4-H Horse Program and is very happy to be here! Here is an overview of some of the most pop- ular 4-H activities.

Horsemanship Standards T e Maryland 4-H Horsemanship Standards

are designed to help 4-H members progres- sively develop knowledge of horse care, horse management, and horsemanship skills. T e Horsemanship Standards are divided into Knowledge, English Riding, and Western Rid- ing Standards, each containing six levels.

Maryland Horse Jamboree and Communica- tions Contest T e Maryland Horse Jamboree is a horse- focused camp. Jamboree is a traveling event that moves locations around the state every two years. Local clubs and counties take turns hosting and planning the program. Jamboree features artistic, creative, and fun contests; a horsemanship exam similar to the Hippology contest; arts and crafts, lectures, demonstra- tions, and more. T e State Horse Communica- tions Contest is conducted at Jamboree.

Maryland State Fair Horse Show T e Maryland 4-H State Fair Horse Show is four days of exciting and competitive English

and Western riding held at the Maryland State Fairgounds in Timonium, MD. 4-H competitors from all around the state come to participate.

Maryland 4-H State Dressage Show T e Maryland 4-H Dressage Show of-

fers 4-H project members an opportunity to compete in English or Western Dressage on a statewide level. Judges are encouraged to com- municate with the contestants and help make this competition a learning experience.

Horse Bowl Horse Bowl can best be described as “It’s

Academic,” only with horse-related questions. Teams of four face off in front of a panel of judges and a moderator. Both teams and indi- viduals compete for respective awards, and the top Senior individuals can qualify to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup.

Horse Judging T e Maryland 4-H State Horse Judging Contest tests the 4-Her’s knowledge of horse conformation and way of going. T e contest has a mixture of halter and under saddle (or in harness) classes with four horses to judge in each class. After placing the classes, contestants defend their placings for select classes by giving their oral reasons to the judges.

Hippology Hippology is a Greek term meaning “the study of horses.” Hippology is a contest that tests 4-H members’ knowledge of horses and horse-related items through written exams, slides, a wide variety of stations and identifi ca- tion tables, and judging classes. Members iden- tify parts of the horse, equine diseases, equip- ment and tack, nutrients, and much more.

Eastern National Round-Up T e Maryland 4-H Horse Program sends its champion teams and individuals from the Horse Bowl, Horse Judging, Hippology, Individual and Team Demonstrations, and Public Speak- ing State Contests to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup held each year in Louisville, Kentucky. Maryland 4-Hers are among tough competition as more than 600 4-Hers from 28 states compete each year.

Maryland Horsemen’s Party For more than 35 years, the Maryland Horse-

men’s Party has served as the primary fundraiser for the Maryland 4-H Horse Program. Funds generated support 4-H equine educational programs, regional and national trips, state contests, scholarships, and opportunities for volunteers and members to attend leadership conferences and equine-related workshops.

NEW Mini Maryland T oroughbred Career Program T is year marks the start of a NEW Mini

Maryland T oroughbred Career Program be- ing created in partnership with the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. T e program will be off ered to 4-H youth ages 13 and up.
