Maryland’s National News Makers, continued Smallwood Earns USEA Award


In 2017, the U.S. Eventing Association be- gan its new Volunteer Incentive Program, sponsored by Sunsprite Warmbloods, in which volunteers acoss the county can log their hours for year-end awards and prizes. T e fi rst win- ner of the USEA Volunteer of the Year award went to Maryland’s own Michael Smallwood (Dickerson). Mike logged 221 volunteer hours at USEA recognized events this year. Mike traveled to several events this year


volunteering his time as an EMT, announcer, score collector, jump judge... pretty much ev- erything and anything you can think of for the sport of eventing!


UMD Earns MHBA Award T e Maryland Horse Breeders Associa-


tion presented the University of Maryland Equine Studies Program and Dr. Amy Burk with the Special Recognition Award on Jan- uary 30 during the Maryland Horse Industry Day in Annapolis. Dr. Burk and others at UMD revitalized the Equine Breeding Program in 2013 and have since produced nine T oroughbred foals. Several of these young T oroughbreds have hit the track running for earnings of $103,000 to date and breeder bonuses of $10,410. Seven of these weanlings and year-


ling were sold at auctions for $30,900. T e pro- gram has trained 71 students in the business of equine breeding and sales. After graduating from UMD, fi ve students


have gone on to be employed by top breeding farms in Maryland and Kentucky, ten have been interns with various industry programs in Maryland and Kentucky, and seven have be- come veterinarians or vet techs. “T is award recognizes the important role


that the University of Maryland Equine Stud- ies Program and Dr. Burk are taking in prepar- ing the next generation to lead a strong and vital horse industry,” said MHBA executive director Cricket Goodall.


EQUUS Humanitarian Award T is year’s EQUUS Foundation Humani-


tarian Award went to Victoria McCullough of Gaithersburg. McCullough is the chairman and owner of Chesapeake Petroleum and is an avid equestrian and patron of equestrian sports.


In 2007, McCullough became aware of the horse slaughter issue and since then, has invested time and resources to pro- tecting America’s at-risk horses. She has rescued over 11,000 horses and has spent the last 10 years advocating for state and federal legislation to ban the slaughter and transport to slaughter of American horses. At the federal level, her meetings with
