USEA Makes Changes to Young Event Horse Program

In response to competitor requests, the US

Eventing Association has made signifi cant changes to its Young Event Horse Program for the 2018 season. T e biggest change is that the Conformation section of the test will no longer be held at YEH qualifying events and will only be included at the championships. Tradition- ally, YEH classes were judged in three parts; Conformation, Jumping/Gallop and Dressage. T e change means that in terms of scoring, only the Jumping/Gallop and Dressage tests will be used for qualifying competitions. T e second big change is the new scoring sys-

tem. For the Jumping phase, each jump will be scored individually on a scale of zero to three. T e course designers will set exactly fi ve show jump obstacles and exactly 10 cross-country obstacles for horses to jump. T us, horses will be scored over 15 jumps in total. At the cham- pionship level, the Jumping/Gallop test will now count as 70% of the fi nal score. In addition, the YEH Committee voted out

the “bye-year” for mare, which had allowed a mare that had a full-term foal to compete an

age group down. Now, all horses, no matter their gender or if they have had a foal or not, must compete at their re- spective age groups, no exceptions. Finally, the Dres-

sage tests for each age group have been shortened. At the qualifying level, horses are no longer asked to halt at the end of their tests and are scored on the walk as they exit the arena. All new tests can be found on useventing.com. T e East Coast YEH Championships will be held at Fair Hill International again this year, October 18-19 while the West Coast YEH Championships are held in Fresno, CA.
