Maryland Will Miss


Congratulations to Paige and Dan Nissley of King Construction Co, LLC, who were married on September 3 in Jacksonville, Florida.


Karen Ann Pryzbyla, longtime pony rider for the Maryland Jockey Club, died on October 24 of leukemia. She was 64 and lived in Laurel. Pryzbyla did not start riding until she married rider Eddie, who is now the senior outrider for MJC. She worked for over 40 years as a pony rider and was known around the barns as “mom.” Outrider Lisa McKelveen said of Pryzbyla, “She always took care of me when I fi rst started in the pony business. She was like that with everyone. She treated me and my friend like daughters.” Bobby Lillis, who directs the Horsemen’s Assistance Fund said, “She was a class act in the Maryland racing community and always had a radiant smile. She was my go-to person if I ever needed to fi nd another pony person. She knew everybody and everybody knew her and loved her.” Joan McHenry Hoblitzell of Baltimore died on October 28 at the age of 82. Born in

Baltimore, she moved with her family to the upper Green Spring Valley area in 1951. She graduated from Garrison Forest School in 1952 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in New York in 1956. Hoblitzell began riding at an early age and eventually rode in the Maryland Hunt Cup. She won the Green Spring Old Fashioned in 1966. Hoblitzell and her husband Alan owned a farm in Glyndon before moving to Mantua Mill Road. She was an active member of the Green Spring Worthington Valley Planning Council and was a trained volunteer naturalist at the Irvine Nature Center. Robert Simon Bricken of Reisterstown died on November 13. He was married to Holly


Bricken.

A fond farewell to Julio and Jessica Mendoza, of Mendoza Dressage, who moved to Columbus, North Carolina. Jessica Lohman has been named to the Advisory Board for the Virginia Horse Center. Welcome back to veteran jockey Malcolm


Franklin who recently returned to Maryland from the Midwest. Vicki Lowell has been appointed as USEF Chief Marketing and Content Offi cer and will be relocating to Lexington, Kentucky.
