Longtime Maryland veterinarian Dr. David Zipf of Howard County was selected to receive the 2016 Joe Kelly Maryland Million Unsung Hero Award, presented by the Maryland Million Ltd. Board of Directors at Maryland Million. T e annual award recognizes honesty, hard work and humility and celebrates important characteristics that are valuable but often unrewarded and serve as an inspiration to others. Dr. Zipf has worked for the Maryland Racing Commission for over 50


years and was featured T e Equiery’s annual “People Behind the Preakness” article in the May 2016 edition (see “People Profi les” on T e Equiery’s Archives page). He joined MRC right after graduating from Ohio State University and was hired by Ken Schertle as a staff veterinarian. “Dr. Zipf has provided more than 50 years of veterinary service to


the Maryland horse racing industry,” said MRC executive director Mike Hopkins. “T roughout that time, he has provided and continues to off er the industry a wealth of knowledge and personal commitment to the health, safety and welfare of the horses that compete in Maryland.”
