Sykesville has been a Maryland Horse Shows Association member for more than 50 years. She started competing her father’s ponies as a child, rode as a junior at big shows like the Washington International Horse Show, and in 2022, she transitioned from adult amateur to professional rider. Today, she contin- ues to excel in the hunter and jumper rings with her stable of off-the-track Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods. Outside the show ring, she became one of the first African American female jockeys in the U.S. The Equiery could not think of a more fitting person to be on the cover of our annual awards issue than Terry West. On the cover, she is riding the OTTB Road Rage at the 2013 Totally Thoroughbred Show at Pimlico in the Jumper Classic. She won that year on Classic Rock.
