Looking Forward to the Day We Truly See Each Other

Have you ever seen a time-lapse video of a seed growing into a blooming flower? It shows in a minute what can take months. I don’t think I’m alone in wishing we could speed forward to the time when it’s safer for all of us to gather in person. While uncertainty still carries the day—variants, vaccine manufacturing capacity, and vaccine hesitancy being only a few of the unknowns—it’s now balanced by more hope with every story of a resident being able to see loved ones again. The pandemic’s isolation showed many of us the

importance of truly seeing others, as we strived through cameras and video to understand and relate the way we can face to face. Ironically, the pandemic also helped many of us to see more clearly: Bias, injustice, generational trauma, and the health disparities these factors lead to could not be denied. We saw how senior living and other caregiver heroes stretched themselves to help others—and the damage when they pushed themselves too hard. And once we saw it, we wanted to do something about it. People in senior living are natural advocates—your focus is on improving quality of life for other people, standing up for their health and independence, as well as standing up for residents’ families and your community’s employees. This Advocacy Issue shares some actions to take, ideas to get started, and ways to make a difference from your own life to Capitol Hill.

The value of seeing each other in person will be brought home at the upcoming Senior Living Executive Conference to be held in Phoenix, Ariz., Sept. 13-15. The theme, appropriate for a time when we’ve had to depend on each other, is “Better Together.” You’ll find a preview on page 9 with information, the schedule at a glance, and exhibitors. A few interesting features I’d like to highlight: • We’re offering a whole track on Occupancy & Operations—the interrelated factors you told us were most important right now.

• The Dining & Hospitality Conference, with programming provided by the Culinary Institute of America, is a unique conference-within-a-conference with instruction from the best in the business—and access to many of the conference features.

• The Design Pavilion at the Expo highlights interesting trends such as the design/ health intersection and the growing energy and talent in interior design entering the industry.

• The Executive Director Leadership Institute fosters meaningful connections as well as education—and attendees also have access to many conference events and networking opportunities.

Look for early bird registration in May, and check conference.argentum.org for the latest news. And see you soon!
