Recognizing Eff ective Leadership and Improving Managerial Strength

“People leave managers, not companies.” We’ve all heard it before. Recent Gallup polls have even noted that having a bad manager tops the list of reasons for 50 percent of employees who leave an organization. In an industry where recruiting and retaining dedicated employees is a critical focus area, it’s more important than ever to have strong leaders who possess the skills required to support a team—and keep that team. In this issue of Senior Living Executive, the Leadership Issue, we highlight many industry leaders who are inspiring their teams

and we share their advice for advancing managerial strength. We also introduce the 2019 Argentum Senior Living Leaders Under 40 (p.24); you’ll learn about the more than two dozen young leaders selected and their mission-driven accomplishments. Additionally, we profi le the 2019 Argentum Best of the Best Award winners (p.42) and their innovative programs. Both the deserving young leaders and the pioneering programs will be recognized at the 2019 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference in San Antonio April 15-17. This issue also takes a deeper dive into women in senior living leadership (p.14).

We profi le seven women who have excelled in the industry and made senior living a career of choice—from a senior living provider CEO to a REIT executive to a state leader, and more. The successes of women in the industry served as the launching pad for Argentum’s new Women in Leadership initiative, celebrating the contributions women have made to the growth and health of the senior living industry. We also take a closer look at what leadership lessons senior living executives have learned from their time working in other industries (p.6). Senior living executives today have come from various other industries—airline, engineering, hospitality, restaurant, and telecommunications, among others. During their career progressions, they’ve learned what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to eff ective leadership, and here, they share that knowledge. Finally, you’ll be introduced to Senior Living Impact in this issue (p.48)—an Argentum initiative that off ers data on the quantifi able eff ects of senior living at the state and federal levels. As senior living professionals, we know the enormous impact senior living has on the broader community; this research shows what areas see the most infl uence. We look forward to seeing many of you in San Antonio and hope that you gain actionable takeaways to improve care and operations at your company or community.
