EMPLOYMENT AND THE ECONOMY With mostly rural landscapes, the Dordogne has diverse farming and food industries, but incomes are relatively low, notably for labourers, farmers and artisans. Pensioners have the most disposable income, along with the three million tourists who visit every year, as the Dordogne is France’s top non-coastal tourism destination. Tourism is a vital part of the local economy, representing 22% of the region’s income. ■
WHAT THE AGENTS SAY…
Co-director of estate agency Agence Eleonor, Terrie Simpson has a broad
knowledge of the Dordogne. Here she shares her insights. “Prices in the Dordogne are
very competitive compared to houses or apartments near large cities, and this is particularly true in the more rural areas. You can find properties with a lot of land that are so much more affordable than the equivalent in the UK. Farms with barns and outbuildings represent excellent value for money. “The property market has
changed significantly over the past few years. Our first marked change was pre-Brexit, which generated a rush of English clients wanting to
purchase or rent a property before the Brexit deadline. The next significant shiſt in the market was due to Covid, and as the lockdowns started to liſt, we saw an influx of Parisians and other city dwellers looking for homes with more space. The net result of this was a shortage of properties, causing an increase in prices and an unprecedented number of houses sold at asking price. “The market is now more
stable, but with a slight decrease in prices, however, it is still a sellers’ market. There are lots of popular villages and locations in the Dordogne due to its proximity to Bergerac airport. Certain areas are a major attraction to British buyers, such as the popular bastide town of Eymet.”
