LOCATION

Villeréal was founded by Alphonse de Poitiers in 1265

is a lovely route between Lauzun and Miramont-de- Guyenne. From the Lac du Saut du Loup, it takes you through the local landscaped countryside towards the Lac de l’Escourou, passing elegant stone farmhouses, châteaux and watermills, transporting you back in time. Lauzun tourist office offers more information on the route.

UNIQUE VILLERÉAL One of my favourite bastide towns is Villeréal. Located between Bergerac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot, it was founded in 1265 by Count Alphonse de Poitiers, who also built Castillonnès and Monflanquin bastides. Hosting one of the oldest markets in France, which dates back to 1305, this bastide really offers something very unique and beautiful and is a must-visit for anyone wanting to discover the Circuit des Bastides. Hardcore walking and

cycling enthusiasts will find the most elevated trails in the area along the Circuit de la Bastide Royale. This trail is almost 74km long, offering a challenging route from village to village where you

will discover Romanesque churches and historic pigeonniers and monuments. Property here has been in

demand with British buyers for over 20 years, especially with its close proximity to Bergerac airport. Character homes such as traditional stone farmhouses are sought after, but we are currently seeing a high demand for

village properties with shops and amenities within a short walk too. Prices start at about €100,000 for a stone property and can reach €1m-plus depending on the finish. Whichever bastide towns

and routes you decide to visit or search for a home in, you are sure to come across a wealth of landscapes and

pretty villages with unusual heritage. The area is truly rich with its wealth of culture, architecture, heritage and atmosphere. A visit here will make you feel like you are in a real fairytale. ■
