THOUGHTS PIGEONNIER
FROM THE
3 THINGS I’VE LEARNT
THIS ISSUE P11
Although prices for country property in France rose in 2022, the number of
transactions has fallen P54
In the French schooling system, homework doesn’t have to be done at home
P84 The ‘tontine’ clause
protects happily married couples but it’s a whole different story if you divorce
“What are we waiting for?” These were the words spoken by Monica Roberts to her husband Simon, on a grey and rainy day navigating the rat race in the UK. They’d been dreaming of making the move to southern France, and it wasn’t long before they made that dream come true – you can find out more about the couple, who now run painting holidays in Hérault, on page 30. Reading that made me think about why we put off making decisions that have such potential to improve our lives. Fear of failure, complacency and just life generally getting in the way are all to blame. If you’re contemplating buying a place in France, whether for holidays or a fresh new start, I hope the Roberts’ story will inspire you to make your own dreams come true. In fact, there’s no shortage of inspiration in this issue, especially if you’re keen to put your own stamp on a property – within these pages you’ll find beautiful homes created in Charente, the Loire, Gascony and Limousin. Bonne chance!
