CAMPING GUIDE 2023 Europe last year. In Hikers making their way to the iconic Puy de Dôme in Auvergne

wonderful areas for campers to enjoy a summer break with a spot of boating, swimming and other plenty of other watersports. However, for campers who enjoy visiting cities, the region is blessed. Rhône- Alpes is home to Lyon at the confl uence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. It is the place in France to enjoy renowned local cuisine (the late Paul Bocuse is a serioous icon) at

a famed bouchon restaurant, with plenty of atmosphere and history. Visitors can absorb over 2,000 years of history from the famed Fourvière panoramic viewpoint and explore the city’s traboules (passageways) as well as its silk industry heritage. Other cities and towns worth taking in are Saint- Étienne and Grenoble, which was the green (eco) capital of

Auvergne, enjoy the historic city of Clermont-Ferrand, noted for its Michelin tyre heritage and its rugby-mad population. And don’t miss pretty Le Puy-en-Velay, préfecture of the Haute-Loire department, or the fantastic Vulcania theme park. In terms of natural wonders, the Pont d’Arc is hard to beat. Ardèche, in which it sits, is a wonderful area for camping, with gorgeous riverside spots to relax in (and kayaks and canoes to explore the scenery). Then there’s the Chamonix glacier and the spa towns of Évian and Thonon, not forgetting the delightful Côtes du Rhône vineyards from Vienne to Tournon. There is plenty to tease the taste buds – this is the proud home of superb AOP produce, from Bresse poultry and Ardèche chestnuts to Grenoble walnuts, Nyons

olives and Puy lentils. All this plus plenty of Michelin- starred dining options. Further information Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes tourist board www.auvergnerhonealpes- tourisme.com/en
