made it his mission to take us outside as much as possible. Once a week, come rain or shine, the whole class would bundle into the minibus and head off on an adventure. Our days were fi lled with walks, science experiments and learning about nature. In Year 6, our walking became more
W
purposeful as we prepared for a treat: climbing to the top of Helvellyn, the third-highest peak in the Lake District. While my memories of sitting at a school desk have faded over time, I can clearly recall the colours of the landscape, the excitement of sliding down hills and the sense of accomplishment I felt at completing such a big challenge. Learning outside the classroom isn’t limited to experiences in nature; it
can happen in settings such as school halls, museums and workshops. On page 15, we look at what happens when staff take lessons beyond those four walls and how parents and PTAs can provide support. If anyone in your school community is planning an outdoor fundraising
challenge, such as a run, trek or skydive, they may want to join one of the many third-party events available. These challenges require minimal organisation and could be a quick win! Read more on page 23. We can’t round off our summer issue without mentioning the summer
fair – one of the biggest events in many fundraising calendars. From a video game-themed fair (page 29) to a festival-style event (page 30) and a DIY guide to building games that anyone can follow (page 34), we aim to make your fair the best ever! For more summer fair ideas and advice, visit our
