Built in collaboration with global leaders in philanthropy and childhood education, SuperKind is an award-winning platform for schools that helps integrate active citizenship and philanthropy into their classrooms and the broader curriculum. At Surrey Square Primary, a
large academy school in south east London, headteacher Matt Morden explains how they use SuperKind to drive change and advocate for social action in their community.
‘We’ve always been strongly
committed to campaigning on issues that directly affect our families; we believe this is part of our duty as a school. When we saw that this work resulted in significant changes within communities and empowered our children and families to understand the difference they could make, we wanted to make campaigning more of a universal offer. Through the SuperKind resources, pupils have started learning about UN Sustainable Development Goals.
to address a pervasive pest problem in their homes. Aware that they couldn’t personally eradicate rats from all houses, they decided to make the council listen to their needs and help. They wrote letters on rat-shaped cards which they sent to the council in a box, so whoever opened it would get a pile of rats on their desk. The children did such a wonderful job of catching the council’s attention that the council sent the cabinet member for housing to the school to speak to students and their parents. The children and their parents felt listened to by the council and this meeting saw the start of a series of positive measures.’ The SuperKind platform features
lesson plans, presentations and assemblies. It also includes inspirational stories from other young change-makers, a directory of charities pupils can choose to support, and toolkits that contain ideas for actions eco-clubs and school councils can take.
