n a grey winter’s day, I fi nd there’s nothing quite like curling up under a blanket with a good book for warmth and comfort.

So, I was surprised to learn that only around a third of children agree. Reading for pleasure is one of the key indicators of a child’s future outcome, so if your PTA or school is looking for a meaningful project this year, turn to page 15 to fi nd out why a library could be transformative.

If this year marks a signifi cant anniversary for your school, take

inspiration from the Friends of St Mary’s School. They hosted a fantastic Great Gatsby-inspired ball (page 27), complete with a champagne reception and a delicious three-course meal, creating lasting memories while raising £13,000 for their cause. January is the perfect month to start planning your Mother’s Day

celebrations. Whether you prefer the term ‘wonderful women’ or ‘mothers and others’, we have great fundraising gift ideas and community-driven event ideas to explore on pages 22 and 35. While many of us are aware of spring customs such as maypole

dancing, schools often overlook the value of traditional songs, dances and stories. On page 29, we highlight how these folk traditions, far from being buried in the past, are living, evolving practices that offer a wonderful opportunity to unite your community and spark fresh and profi table fundraising ideas. Substantial projects such as libraries often require more funds than events alone can achieve. If you hope to embark on something big in 2025 and have resolved to start applying for grants, funding specialist Claire Welburn guides you through the basics on page 38. Wishing you a year of fundraising success!
