Taking care of business
We’ve come a long way since school was all about simply learning the three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic. Now there’s time spent on developing a host of new skills, with enterprise-based lessons among the classes preparing pupils for employability – these include problem-solving, leadership skills, effective communication and team work. Schemes such as Pupils Profit offer programs to schools that teach children these skills and can also bring about positive change. For example, children running the Healthy Tuck Shop are boosting the ‘five a day’ intake in schools, while the Eco-Refills program is reducing the use of single-use plastics. Pupils Profit supports the planning, set-up
and operation of each business, while pupils are encouraged to assess what’s contributed to the success of their business, what problems they’ve encountered and how successfully they’ve overcome them. Pupils Profit supplies and delivers all products based on their health and educational benefits as well as their appeal to children. Pupils at Downsview Primary
School are running a successful Eco-Refill station, selling body wash, handwash and washing-up liquid to parents, alongside the PTA’s weekly second-hand uniform sale. Friends of Downsview Primary School, Croydon ‘We have recently linked up with the Refills 4U initiative to run a second-
hand uniform stall alongside the refills shop. We felt that the sale of second-hand uniform not only provides a really cost-effective service to parents and carers but also fits perfectly with the “reduce, reuse, recycle” ethos of Refills 4U. If pre- loved school uniform is not reused within the school community, it will end up in landfill. We hope that combining the sales will bring more parent/carer customers to each sale and gives Friends Of Downsview members the opportunity to get their refills and reduce their plastic waste too – made so much easier by having it available at school every week.’
