The Hen House Farm
Run by husband and wife team Paul and Sandy McEvoy, The Hen House Farm is committed to helping schools experience the joy and discovery that owning poultry can bring. The company helps pupils raise chicks and hires out hens to support empathy and learning through the curriculum. The Hen House Farm can supply rare breeds, hybrid poultry, waterfowl and hatching eggs alongside all the kit which schools need to sustain this unique teaching resource for years to come. The couple are committed to using trusted local craftspeople who make bespoke coops that are sturdy, practical and built to last. The Hen House Farm offers a ‘try before you buy’ hen and coop hire with all equipment and feed supplied, so schools can have a trial run to see if raising hens is for them. The ‘raise your own chicks’
incubation hire package for classrooms contains everything you need to hatch and interact with your own chicks successfully. Pupils can discover the wonders of life and witness the exciting journey a young animal goes on and the challenges these endearing creatures face. This fully resourced package underpins aspects of the curriculum, including literacy, numeracy, sciences and social development. Rebecca Brewer, class teacher, St Catherine’s Primary, Launceston “The primary school where I teach had underused grounds, and I felt immediately drawn to The Hen House Farm’s tailored service for schools. I started the project as a way of doing maths with parents and pupils in a practical context – measuring the run, calculating the food, and working out
timings and temperatures in an incubator. We are so pleased we did it – our hen run is now a central part of the school. The original children who oversaw the hatching are gone, but they have passed on the legacy of caring for the happy, healthy, three-year-old hens to the following years. I also lead science in school and know the invaluable experience the children get from hands-on interaction with animals and the chance to ask questions about nature. It’s also a way of approaching mental wellbeing. My class are timetabled in groups to check the hens and ‘chicken day’ is a highlight for them. Even years on, taking home an egg for tea is still the best treat!”
