Banish worries with a wellbeing workshop

Bigfoot Arts Education runs creative and performing arts workshops and assemblies within primary, secondary and post-16 educational establishments. Working in conjunction with accredited counsellor and psychotherapist Amy Smythe, aka ‘The Worry Wizard’, Bigfoot Arts has developed a mental health and wellbeing programme that brings a therapeutic approach to performing arts. The workshops, which are run by specially trained performing arts experts, teach children about mental wellbeing before exploring different ways they can express their emotions, helping them develop tools to manage and ‘outshine’ their worries.

Claire Wade, teacher, Oakfield Primary Academy, Dartford, Kent (716 pupils): ‘We had previously used Bigfoot Arts Education for our Equality Week. They had delivered some really creative workshops and assemblies for the whole school based on gender stereotypes and British values (KS2), plus Empire Windrush workshops with KS1 and a storytelling session with

our reception classes. We were so impressed that when it came to planning our Mental Health Week activities, we got in touch. On the day, they arrived well ahead of

time and brought with them all they needed. They were very self-sufficient, bringing banners, props and a USB with film and music, which we helped them set up on the projector in the hall. The day began with a 30-minute

assembly for all of our KS2 pupils, then we held four one-hour workshops with Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, with 30 children per session. We had targeted specific children from each year group to take part in the workshops, so we had ten per class. Those selected were children who had

experienced issues with worries and anxieties previously, or who we thought had the capacity to in the near future, based on their current needs or situation. We then had another assembly at the end of the day with KS1 (approximately 192

children), so all children could benefit.’ l For more information, visit bigfootartseducation.co.uk
