How to run a successful organisation and engage with your community SECTION – Strap here Managing your PTA
Why being on the PTA is good for you!
PTAs help to improve the lives of thousands of children across the country every day, and being a PTA committe member can be incredibly rewarding. But it’s all too easy to get frustrated when you experience apathy or a lack of support, especially when your committee is small. So we want to take this opportunity to say that we’re proud of each and every one of you, to remind you how amazing you are and the impact your hard work has...
Raise much-needed funds Schools are becoming more and more dependent on PTAs for funds. The money you help raise will benefit not only your children and their peers but also future pupils. Just think how many children will play on that trim trail, learn in that forest school or study with that Chromebook. Being on the PTA is not only a
way for you to make an impact now – it’s a way to leave a legacy.
Connect to other people Working as a group in a PTA environment is a great way to make friends through shared experiences. Whether it’s labelling the raffle prizes, sorting last-minute volunteer rotas or wondering why someone donated half a bottle of shampoo at the mufti day, you’re in it together. You can meet and bond with parents from other year groups who you wouldn’t normally speak to, and get to know teachers and support staff on a less formal basis.
Use skills and learn new ones A job that might be easy for you, such as writing newsletters, accounting or taking minutes, could prove to be a real challenge for someone else. Being a PTA volunteer offers you the opportunity to use and develop your talents and to teach others. It’s an excellent opportunity to practise new skills such as team leadership and requesting funding before you
use them in the workplace. Remember to add your key PTA duties to your CV and LinkedIn profile if you’re looking to increase your appeal to potential employers.
Benefit from being involved Close links between school and parents matter! Children do better at school in a variety of ways when parents are involved, and PTA parents get more opportunities to have their say. If you want to build relationships
with the leadership team, or are keen to find out more about the school’s plans for development or better understand the issues they’re facing, the PTA is a great place to start. Yes, there are times when being on
the PTA can leave you feeling jaded, but giving something back does make you feel good and you really can make a big difference to the experience of children – and the teachers and parents – throughout the school.
