Children are fleeing in greater numbers– alone

In 2015, half of the 36,000 children detained by Mexican migration authorities

were unaccompanied.

Parents often feel they have no choice to secure their child’s survival—and future—except to send them out of the country. Beyond the physical and emotional trauma of being without a parent, children travelling alone on their journey to safety are at high risk of sexual assault or being kidnapped for labour or sexual exploitation. «

MY GRANDMOTHER IS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME TO LEAVE. SHE SAID: “IF YOU DON’T JOIN, THE GANG WILL SHOOT YOU. IF YOU DO, THE RIVAL GANG OR THE COPS WILL SHOOT YOU. BUT IF YOU LEAVE, NO ONE WILL SHOOT YOU.
