Four ways UNHCR works to protect and empower women 3. Tackling sexual violence
1. Involving women in decision making All UNHCR interventions are based on consultations with refugees, made separately with women and girls, so they may express their specific needs and wishes in a safe, confidential environment. From start to finish, UNHCR connects them to programs that will build on their own skills and experiences to find support and solutions.
2. Creating safe havens
Making sure women and girls feel safe in refugee environments is crucial. In camps, for example, we provide good lighting, design separate wash facilities for men and women, and supply safe shelters for women and girls. We also work with refugee communities to provide equal access to the services and supplies women and girls need, taking into account their specific needs (such as topics related to sexual and reproductive health).
UNHCR focuses on preventing violence and discrimination by using community-led strategies. We work to discourage harmful practices such as female genital mutilation
and promote preventative health
programs. We work with men to promote behaviour that respects women’s roles in the community, and their physical and mental integrity. We also support survivors of violence through medical and legal support, counselling and safe shelters.
4. Getting girls in school
Having an education equips girls with the skills they need to thrive and make the most of their lives. UNHCR creates safe learning environments, provides teaching materials and school uniforms, trains teachers and provides separate toilet facilities for girls, all to reduce the barriers that keep them out of school. «
